My artwork is grounded in my daily experiences as a woman, mother, artist and teacher. All of my questions, reflections, writing, and creations are rooted from this. As a woman I wonder about engendered roles I unintentionally play into, as a mother I wonder how to answer my children’s difficult questions about life, as a teacher I wonder how our schools are fostering children’s independent and unique personalities, as a spouse and friend I wonder how we nurture long, sustaining relationships that support one another. I am interested in life-affirming, sustainable, simple modes of thinking and living which translates through my artwork.
My materials are ordinary & mixed: I work fluidly between painting, knitting, assemblage, screen-printing, collage, photo transfers & metalwork, among other media. I am both intrigued by and suspicious of the divide between "fine art" and "craft," and often find myself dissolving such distinctions in my own work. Antiquated statements and objects, found materials, natural constructions (like parts of nests) all find their way into my work.
Finally, while I am interested in initiating discussions related to contemporary culture, I need viewers to enter into such conversations with me. I see my work as an invitation to participate in dialogues in which we can, together, inquire deeply into the world & circumstances in which we find ourselves.
