Champion of Wilcox Park, The Sycamore Maple
This original graphite drawing honors the Sycamore Maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), a recognized Champion Tree growing in the heart of Wilcox Park, Rhode Island. Rendered entirely in pencil on archival paper, the artwork captures the tree’s commanding presence, from its broad, spreading crown to the textured bark that reveals its age and strength.
Created during my artist residency in Wilcox Park, this piece is the result of hours of close observation and deep connection with the landscape. The Sycamore Maple, officially listed as one of the largest of its kind in the state, stands as a living monument to endurance and quiet majesty. Through careful line work and shading, I aimed to convey both its scale and its spirit.
This drawing is a celebration of Rhode Island’s natural heritage and a tribute to one of its most iconic trees.
